so sad that coming back lasted only one day! mmmm, I've done that b4, I'm hoping this time I'm back for a while. Firmly beliving that my soul needs me to write! I enjoyed reading this, although I am now worrying not about the quantity of the carrots but of their texture beneath all that gravy? more…

You really love your showers, don't you!
The turning off of the shower ritual is exactly the same for me - I have to twist my wrist awkwardly to make sure I can get the full rotation in one go!
We were without heating for a couple of weeks in January, and the bliss of a hot shower was the total counterpoint to the horror o more…

You'll never guess what I had for Christmas. It was my very own copy of "Eats, Shoots and Leaves", even though I hadn't mentioned it to my wife at all. I've just finished it and thoroughly enjoyed it. Really good! more…

I was sat right at the back of a Tristar once, and it was fascinating to watch how the fuselage twisted visibly during turbulence, and the distance between the floor and ceiling increased when the sides of the cabin approached one another. Planes are much more bendy than you expect, and that is why they don't break. Well, not too often. more…

I would //never// laugh at Pizza Express in case they took their delicious dough balls away from me!
I've never seen an honesty bar anywhere, and the last place I'd expect to find one is in London! I have this... assumption, I suppose, that everyone is too jaded to trust anyone else! more…

Very interesting blog posting. Life is full of these weird contrasts i.e. multi-million dollar homes in NY with beggars on the streets. more…

Thanks :-) Yes - I deleted one that I wrote and then thought could make me look a bit pretentious. I've just re-enabled it for friends only, as you noticed it! more…

Doggerel is such a good word.
And my favourite pointless sign is one I saw in a photo - "Water on the road when raining".
Not quite the same thing, but I love the badly translated signs you see on sites like www.engrish.com - such as "Please be gentle when carefully falling down the stairs". more…

I already mentioned her in a comment, but have you read "Eats Shoots and Leaves" by Lynn Truss? Such a funny book, and I learned a few things too!
You can read a few pages on Amazon:

Just going back over your last few entries when I came across this one. Not much to add to what has been said above really, but sometimes things take a while to be processed, and you might find that the oddest thing brings some of the grief out at the strangest times, such as in your post about walking to work.
Hope you're ok. more…

Thank you :-) The people that believe that people fundamentally *aren't* good - *they* are the victims. They constantly have to worry and live with suspicion, looking over their shoulders because they think that everyone is out to get them. You can't live happily without trust, and you can't trust without believing in the fundamental goodness of pe more…

Oh I really liked that, and it wasn't a weak ending.
Someone said to me because I believe there is good in people that makes me a victim. I think it makes me strong to still believe that. They seem to think I've been protected, but I live in the same world they do.
Summed up modern life quite well.
Ok, I'm a d more…

I was very moved when I read your post, it is a very honest and wonderful tribute to your mother..and your father too.
It is true what you say, that grief can come in waves and can go on for many months if not years in varying degrees. more…

Everyone grieves in their own way, so I hope you're not really worrying that people think you're cold. Complex and deep emotions are sometimes easier private. Even in part from yourself.
I liken it to homesickness. more…

Well, in a word, yes. I also put an apostrophe in "chav's" that shouldn't be there. I was in a slightly sardonic mood when I was coming up with that title - it was intentional :-)

Thanks for your comment Chassy - it's always nice when someone else agrees with you :-) I can't actually imagine people losing their jobs over these mistakes - after all, that would require someone to notice the errors. Plus, more and more people seem to think that grammar is not important as long as the message gets across. The fact that another s more…

I totally agree. Expensive hotels to, as you point out, authorities and other sectors one assumes would wish to be seen as 'faultless', seem happy to send out brochures and leaflets with errors included. I can only assume the print run happens before these errors are noticed and re-runs are considered too costly or time consuming. I wonder if pe more…
